Standing With You by Guy Sebastian

Typically, Sunday nowadays, since I don’t have any posts scheduled and had to restart my current read twice since I didn’t pay attention to what it was reading to me. I listened to most of the new radar playlist on Spotify, but nothing stood out to me from this week’s, so for this post, I will use an old favourite of mine, Standing With You by Guy Sebastian. Listening to it after a few years, the lyrics had a different meaning to me.

When I was in school, I had a few close friends; as a matter of fact, but we barely met outside of school, and when they changed my class in primary school, they didn’t speak to me again. In secondary school, my best friend became my bully, which was hell since she knew what hurt me the most. That situation made me bottle up a lot of stuff because every time I trusted anyone, it felt like it would backfire, causing trust issues as an adult. I don’t enjoy talking about this, and to a point, it feels dumb, but I know I’m not the only one dealing with this, and knowing you aren’t alone is the first step of healing.

Standing With You Lyrics:

The more I tell you you can do this

The more you tell yourself you’re useless

Any advice right now is fruitless

You’re somewhere only you can go

I won’t pretend to know, so

Instead of telling you you’ll be alright

I’m just gon’ be that someone by your side

Yeah let me be that distant satellite

A constant in the sky

‘Cause I’m standing with you tonight

Yeah I will be that voice in your ear

Quietly destroying your fear

You won’t even know that I’m here

But I’m standing with you tonight

Oh I will be the pill for your pain

Until the clouds have run out of rain

Close enough but just out of sight

I’m standing with you tonight

Your head is full and yet it’s hollow

Don’t even think about tomorrow

So if you let me I will follow

Oh if you’re gonna go

At least you’re gonna know

Instead of telling you you’ll be alright

I’m just gon’ be that someone by your side

Oh let me be that distant satellite

A constant in the sky

I’m standing with you tonight

Yeah I will be that voice in your ear

Quietly destroying your fear

You won’t even know that I’m here

But I’m standing with you tonight

Oh I will be the pill for your pain

Until the clouds have run out of rain

Close enough but just out of sight

I’m standing with you

I know I may not say the right thing

Let me tell you one thing

Yeah ’cause there is one thing

You’re wrong about

This world would not be a better place

I don’t wanna lose you now

Yeah I will be that voice in your ear

Quietly destroying your fear

Oh you won’t even know that I’m here

I’m standing with you tonight

Oh I will be the pill for your pain

Until the clouds have run out of rain

Close enough but just out of sight

I’m standing with you tonight

Oh tonight

I’m standing with you tonight

I’m standing with you tonight

Dear Friend:

The more I try to get close

To the friend I used to know

Like we used to be

The more you throw rocks

In the shape of words

That changed their tone

Faster than the speed of sound

Years passed, and I wonder

If you ever think of me

Alex

  1. I’m sorry you had that experience. I just turned 51 and the bully I had in middle school still comes back to haunt me in my mind to this day. It’s a terrible experience, especially when (former) friends are involved.

  2. Bullies live rent free in our heads with the havoc they create with devastation and scars we carry long after….

On the flip side, I wonder if the friend turned bully that weaponized info and past bond, if is happy or facing being bullies now??

I send you sooo much love and healing your way dear Alex.
