It might sound unusual, but being dyslexic can be a unique and cool experience at times; let me explain. I was writing a bookish post where, instead of ‘indie,’ I wrote ‘India,’  and the idea of writing fun facts about India stayed in my head. I’m starting with some interesting geography. India is the most densely populated country in the world, with a total area of 3,287,263 square kilometres and 28 states. India got its name from the river called the Indus, where people settled in the beginning of time.

It has the most extensive postal system in the world.

With more than 150,000 portal offices, which is approximately one-third of China’s, the only portal office situated on a body of water is located on Dal Lake, providing regular mail services.

Her name was Chandro Tomar, known as “Shooter Dadi”, and she was born in Shamli, Uttar Pradesh, India. According to Wikipedia, she died in 2021 at age 89. She was already in her 60s when she started learning how to shoot, and it was only by chance that she did. Her granddaughter didn’t want to go to the shooting club by herself, so she asked her grandma to go with her. When her daughter couldn’t load the gun, her grandma did!

The record of the most children dressed as Mahatma Gandhi.

Four hundred eighty-five children dressed as Mahatma Gandhi gathered in Kolkata and then went on a walk as a demonstration to promote peace in the country and the world.

One of the largest manufacturers in the newspaper industry

With 4700 newspapers produced and sold every day, the interesting part is that they get published in more than 300 languages. Since this article was posted in 2023, I think it would be much less now with the online world, but I was wrong.

Holds the record for the biggest family

If you ever wondered who the biggest family in the world is, I have the answer for you. Ziona Chana holds the record with 39 wives, 94 children, and 33 grandchildren. They live in a 100-room house in Mizoram, India. Ziona died in 2021, but the family is reportedly still together.

I have tried to fact-check as much as possible, but if you notice any errors, please let me know.

  1. Hi Alex, with this information, you are only scratching the surface. Indian civilization is one of the oldest in the world. It existed alongside Egyptian Pharaohs. There is evidence of ancient Indian doctors performing stomach surgeries, brain surgeries and plastic surgeries. Ayurveda is one of the oldest medicine practice in the world and ancient Indian architecture is the kind that can make your jaw drop. Just the population and large family numbers doesn’t mean anything. To understand India, you will have to see it yourself.
