Save You A Seat by Alex Warren

This is the first time since I’ve been writing these posts that I’ve looked for a song to fit the poem I had in mind. This week, I saw a poem called Escape Artist, but sadly, I can’t remember who the writer was. If that person is reading this, let me know, and I will tag you here. As you know, if you have been reading these thoughts, you know that they are typically a life memory or something that happened to me.

As I said, a poem is what made the ball roll since when I read Escape Artist, my mind went to how, as creative people, we leave everyday life in our craft. On the other hand, I have been thinking about weekends from my childhood, which were mostly spent with my aunt. It is something I wrote about in the past with different memories, and today is no exception. The song I picked is Save You a Seat by Alex Warren.

The verses: “Am I who you thought I’d be? Am I what you pictured?” “Did you have me standin’ here in your wildest dreams?”. My aunt, who was like my second mother, passed away when I was 11, so she never met me as Alex or heard anything I wrote, although I doubt she understood English. There’s a memory that keeps going through my head of my first time playing with watercolour paint; it was forbidden for me to use them at home due to the mess I’d create. One day, my aunt covered me in plastic wrap and let me at it

Save You a Seat Lyrics:

I can hear the words you speak when the west wind whispers
I can hear your voice ring clear in the evergreens
Am I who you thought I’d be? Am I what you pictured?
Did you have me standin’ here in your wildest dreams?

Oh, oh
Just like a memory
You never left me
You just left too soon

I’ll save you a seat next to me
Y’always at the table
Hope you’re proud of what you see
Watchin’ with the angels
You’re written in my soul
It’s your blood that I bleed
Wherever you are, wherever I’ll be
I’ll save you a seat

I feel you in the rain that falls, oh, I still get shivers
Runnin’ like our family car down Corvidae
Did you find Mom up there? Tell me, are you with her?
I wonder if the ones who go miss the ones who stay

Oh, oh
Just like a memory
You never left me
You just left too soon

I’ll save you a seat next to me
Y’always at the table
Hope you’re proud of what you see
Watchin’ with the angels
You’re written in my soul
It’s your blood that I bleed
Wherever you are, wherever I’ll be
I’ll save you a seat

Keep your room like nothing changed
Try to love, but it’s not the same
And I damn near broke when I heard your name
You had to go, you couldn’t stay

So I’ll save you a seat next to me
You’re always at the table
Hope you’re proud of what you see
Watchin’ with the angels

Art To Us:

Art knows me in a way

That no one else does

Dipping my finger in the colours

And let them guide me

The journey they want

To take me on

As a team

We create the final piece

For the rest of the world

Or just us

To enjoy

Alex
