First Lines Fridays 19

I don’t know what the author was thinking while writing my current read because I’m 78% in, and the whole book they did one single thing (have sex). I will keep reading since I’m curious if they will move from that room in the end. I will make a wheel with random words and pick a book based on the word it lands on. Song is the word for today. First Lines Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers, formerly hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Note: The original host blog does not appear to be active any longer, but if anyone knows of a new host, please

First Lines :

Dear Islanders,

A big island welcome home to Jac Brock, née Sherman. Spotted this morning on the 8:05 ferry into Grays Bay from Seattle. Alone, obviously. Give her space to heal while she’s on her summer break from teaching. It can’t be easy to have been blindsided like she was earlier this year. If anyone finds out which surname she will be using as she moves forward, please let us know. But at the very least, it’s lovely to see that Jac, Oliver, Josh, and Dave (Greensea’s Royal Siblings) will be in the area for the start of summer.

Summer residents be warned—the city council has lowered the speed limit by 2.5 mph. The specific speed limit is designed to keep people paying attention to the road and not racing for the ferry. The police promise to monitor and enforce it. The proceeds from the fines will be used to pay for the new police station. Rumor has it the old station near the ferry terminal will be turned into a donut shop. Let’s hope they give us the good old-fashioned fried, greasy donuts you get at the State Fair. Remember, donuts are not meant to be a health food.

Goodreads Blurb:

Romance is what Ferry Tales are made of…

Jac
It’s been a not-so-great year. Divorce. Check. Living on Pennies. Check. All I need is a quiet summer back at my childhood home on Greensea Island–sitting on the deck with a glass of rosé, savoring one of Dad’s legendary charcuterie boards, and catching up on all the Sherman Family news. But instead, I find myself in an unexpected conversation with a random British guy in my parents’ kitchen who just casually mentioned he’s rented their house for the summer. My carefully laid out plan has just hit a turbulent wave.

Johnny
She honestly doesn’t know who I am. I can see it in her gigantic green eyes. I didn’t get the oh-my-gosh-you’re Johnny-Nickel eyes or the swoon here-are-my-underpants look. She’s standing at the end of the kitchen counter, brown hair in one of those cattywampus buns, in an oversized white tee hanging off one shoulder and ripped jeans. Looking hella sexy even if she tried to stab me with a house key when I walked in. I just wonder how long I can keep my true identity hidden from her….

And now they’re stuck together…for better or worse!
