Four Halloween Symbols

Okay, I’m a bit embarrassed that I’m almost 30 and still not knowing some Halloween facts, but as I said, it’s not a holiday I grew up with.  I always believe it’s never too late to learn. Last year, I wrote a similar post, but due to storage limitations on the blog, I deleted it. The origins come from the festival of  Samhain during the Celtic era in Britain and Ireland, since it was believed that on November 1st, the world of the spirits and ours are connected.

There are some things we associate with Halloween, but we might not know the meaning behind them, so I plan to look into that today.

Jack-o’-Lanterns

Meaning: To protect from the evil spirits

The beginning: It comes from an Irish legend of Stingy Jack, who tricked the devil and was condemned to roam the earth with only a carved turnip lantern.

The symbolism is light to guide any lost souls.

Ghosts

Meaning: When spirits come to visit our world

The beginning: The veil between worlds is lifted, and it is thought that the two become one.

The symbolism reminds us of mortality, the afterlife, and the supernatural.

Bats

Meaning: They are seen as night creatures associated with mystery and transformation.

The Beginning: Since they often showed up during bonfires and due to their mystic vibe, they are frequently linked to vampires.

The symbolism: Mystery, creation, and the unseen forces that connect everything.

Witches

Meaning: Magic, feminine power, and wisdom.

The Beginning: Their roots lie in being believed to be healers and wise women. However, in the Medieval period, witchcraft was pretty feared, giving them a sinister image associated with this holiday.

The symbolism: Transformation, knowledge, and the balance between light and dark.

I’m keeping it pretty simple since I’m starting to understand that I enjoy writing bite-size posts a lot more.

  1. Thanks Alex! Did you know that in India, Diwali is celebrated around the same time (date based on Lunar calendar falling between mid October and early November). It is celebrated as Festival of light and the house is supposed to have atleast one lamp burning throughout the night. It is also a night when dark magic is supposed to be strongest. (Shudder)
