When I come to my dad’s, it’s a toss of the dice if I sleep or not, and yesterday was a no night, I don’t know why, since I have the same medical bed as I do at my place, so I end up putting my headphones on since we sleep in the same room there which is something that I used to be embarrassed. Still, now I’m putting it on the internet, so I’m over it clearly. Anyway, I was listening to music when the song “Marry Your Best Friend” by Spencer Crandall came on. It’s a song about love and family, and it can only bring happy thoughts, right?
Now I’m the first person to admit that I overthink when it comes to music and lyrics, but once that flash of memory comes, there’s no way I can snap out of it. I considered not sharing this because I’m worried it might be misinterpreted. For years, I feared I would be the same kind of partner my dad was. Now, I’m not saying my dad is a bad man, but he had a hard time accepting my disability and did put blame on me as a child for it. From listening to other people’s stories, I know it’s a cultural thing, but that doesn’t mean it doesn’t cause issues and pain in the family, nonetheless.
“Marry Your Best Friend” Lyrics
Before I talk to her dad I knew I had to talk to mine
Had to talk to a man who knows how to talk to his wife
This fall makes 39 years, so what’s your secret here?
Got an emerald cut she loves that I’m about to buy
And he said
Be the first to apologize even when you’re right and say when you’re wrong
Never pass up on the chance to slow down and dance to her favorite song
That diamond ring’s worth every cent if you marry your best friend
Buy the flowers just because, fill her coffee cup and her tank of gas
And thank God for what you’ve got and don’t ever stop trying to make her laugh
You want a love that will last you till the end
Marry your best friend
Make sure you’ll make the rent but take her on the trip
Cause money spent on memories is money well spent
Son I don’t know everything but I know one thing for sure
If you love her that much right now
You’re only going to love her more so
Be the first to apologize even when you’re right and say when you’re wrong
Never pass up on the chance to slow down and dance to her favorite song
That diamond ring’s worth every cent if you marry your best friend
Buy the flowers just because, fill her coffee cup and her tank of gas
And thank God for what you’ve got and don’t ever stop trying to make her laugh
You want a love that will last you till the end
Marry your best friend
Marry the one who makes you see a better man in the mirror looking back
Marry the one you know you can’t live without
That’s the only way to make it last
Be the first to apologize even when you’re right and say when you’re wrong
Never pass up on the chance to slow down and dance to her favorite song
That diamond ring’s worth every cent if you marry your best friend
Buy the flowers just because, fill her coffee cup and her tank of gas
And thank God for what you’ve got and don’t ever stop trying to make her laugh
You want a love that will last you till the end
Marry your best friend
That diamond ring’s worth every cent
That diamond ring’s worth every cent if you marry your best friend
Daddy
The only dad I had
Meant to protect me from my fears
Not cause me tears
But like broken mirrors
Culture is like cutting glass
That changes the views
Of what is seen and is used to

I always have trouble sleeping when I’m at a different place, especially the first night, which is why I try to make it multiple nights when I have to sleep somewhere else. I attribute it to a different atmosphere or noises.

Beautiful song. Sorry to hear that your father blamed you for all that you were facing. People often think that a disability in child is a question mark on their genes. They try to throw the blame around, and force the child to behave in what they consider the “correct behaviour”. Pathetic.
