Four Books by Elise Baker

Cheers to another unplanned post when I haven’t done my planned ones, but oh well. I also have 400-something emails to see, but I still want to finish my recent book, which is a memoir called Cerebral Palsy: A Story: Finding the Calm After the Storm by Ilana Estelle, since I refuse to go to bed before I finish it, so I might be here for a while. Anyway, I got three books, and they are memoirs about the role women played in saving lives, bringing about change for freedom, and achieving empowerment. They are out of my reading comfort zone, but they are stories that need to be heard and carried forward.

The World Wars of the 20th century caused massive upheavals all over the world. Millions of men from every corner of the globe enlisted in the armed forces to fight, while women took the places of men in the workforce at home. Eighty years later, we still see photographs of Rosie the Riveter and women welding bombers for the Air Force.

What history often overlooks, however, are the extraordinary true-life stories of the brave women from the US, UK, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand who enlisted in the Allied forces in their thousands to serve as nurses behind the front lines, at great danger to themselves.

And while men shot to kill in the North African, European, and the Pacific theaters of war, nurses served right behind them, armed with tools of healing rather than warfare.

It’s hard to imagine today what life was like during the greatest conflict in recent history, but these untold true stories of women heroes of WWII paint a vivid picture of life as a military nurse—from makeshift field hospitals in France to bombed-out station hospitals in Belgium to journeys fraught with danger on ambulance trains, air ambulances, and hospital ships.

Inside Nightingales, Bluebirds & Angels of True Stories of the Courage and Heroism of Nurses on the Front Line in WWII, you’ll learn the true stories of nurses in the Second World War, including:
what it was like for a woman to join the armed services as a nurse and travel across the world to do her duty,
the challenges and dangers the Allied nurses faced on the front lines, as well as the camaraderie and wartime romances they experienced,
how these women confronted changing social norms around gender and race, true stories of survival at the hands of enemy forces in Japanese prisoner-of-war camps, and more.
The stories of these brave women are an inspiring record of duty and selflessness. If you haven’t yet met heroes such as Vivian Bullwinkel and Margot Turner, you’ll definitely want to pick up Nightingales, Bluebirds & Angels of True Stories of the Courage and Heroism of Nurses on the Front Line in WWII today!

What bright secrets transpired during the world’s darkest hours?
Light shone in an era marked by tyranny and mass destruction.

Kindness resurfaced when the lines between friends and foes were blurred.

Hope prevailed when staying hidden and quiet was a civilian’s best chance of survival.

Behold, the Second World War—a ruthless period of oppression and torment that Jews and other minorities were forced to endure. To this day, this event represents one of humanity’s greatest tragedies.

Yet in the thick of cruelty, suffering, and loss, ordinary women secretly stood against the Nazi regime, selflessly serving as bearers of peace and hope. They risked their lives to protect the persecuted without seeking reward or recognition.

Today, we honor these women for their courage, kindness, wit, and resourcefulness during the war.
Here lie their unsung legacies.

Women Rescuers of WWII presents the true stories of brave female heroes during the world’s most perilous crisis. Marvel at the phenomenal untold rescue missions of
Ida and Louise Cook, the Secretive Sisters, whose risky airline flights almost cost them everything.
Ebba Lund, the Red Riding Hood of the Danish Resistance, and the seafaring voyages she arranged for refugees fleeing to Swedish shores.
Irena Sendler, the Good Catholic Smuggler, and her daring plot to liberate Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto.
Marie Schmolka and Doreen Warriner, the Masterminds of the Move, whose Kindertransport scheme freed thousands of children.
Andrée de Jongh, the Postmistress, who smuggled her “parcels”—fallen Allied airmen—from France to neutral Spain.
other extraordinary women who risked it all to stand up for their beliefs!
It takes good, strong women to change the course of the greatest battle in history.
Now ask yourself, what truly makes a hero?
