Many years ago a thief stole my eyes,
and threw them away from light-
I never even saw the face you shone at me
reflected in the canopy above us.
Your voice constantly described my life
for all the mountain walks we breathed
were seen to me as a painted picture
on the blank canvas inside my mind.
Melody of words spoke of heavy clouds
standing suspended still as ready soldiers
in the lake’s sleek ripples, yet afraid
as the sudden wind subsided the water
turned green and, on impulse, I dived in.
I swam naked
while the weight of rust that morning
tore the sky apart
and raindrops fell like bullets all around me,
lashing at my burning skin.
