I won’t lie, I was excited when I saw Moms Who Read Romance Novels by Jenifer Goldin was free on Amazon, but it didn’t allow me to get it due to my location, and I wasn’t able to get it from where I typically find books, so instead I’m showing the latest thriller I grabbed, even if I planned to read LGBTI+ books but I made the rules and I will break them. First Lines Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers that was formerly hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
- Finally… reveal the book!
Note: The original host blog does not appear to be active any longer, but if anyone knows of a new host, please share the information!
First Lines:
Blood feels warm when it’s leaving your body. Like bathwater. Like summer rain. Like tears.
Mine trickles down my neck in steady pulses, each beat of my heart pushing out more of my life. I can feel it pooling beneath me, sinking into the cracks of the road.
The night air chills my skin as I lie in the centre of the desolate highway, but I don’t close my eyes. I can’t. Closing them means giving in.
Please see me.
Please find me.
The words come without sound. My throat is too ruined for voice. But I keep mouthing them, tasting copper with each syllable. The tarmac beneath my cheek has lost the day’s heat, cooling rapidly as darkness falls, but my body is cold everywhere except where the blood flows. My hands are bound behind my back, the fabric cutting deep into my wrists. I flex my fingers, feeling the slick warmth between them, but there’s no give, no chance of freeing myself.

Goodreads Blurb:
Sometimes silence is more terrifying than screams.
Sixteen-year-old Amanda Gray’s life shatters when what should have been a simple walk home with her best friend Sarah turns into a nightmare. One moment they’re picking bluebells in the woods; the next, they’re at the mercy of a predator who seems chillingly familiar with his routine.
Six weeks later, Amanda wakes in a hospital bed with a slash across her throat, her voice stolen, and no memory of how she escaped. And no one will talk to her about Sarah.
And the worst part?
Her most crucial memory might be the one she can’t speak
Where No One Can Hear You is a haunting exploration of survival, memory, and the lengths one will go to save someone they love—even when they can’t save themselves.
