Freebie Friday #3

Hey Everyone

As you know, I’ve been trying a new thing for me, where I share a book I love and provide a free eBook link to it, if possible.

Why did I pick this book?

As people are aware, I keep real around here, and I’m doing something out of my norm, which I’m featuring a novel I haven’t even started, which is a risk because for this kind of post I typically do only with books I love. Here for the Cake by Jennifer Millikin is reminding me of another rom-com, but I can’t remember the title for the life of me. Here’s a quote I saw in a review that I’m sharing: “Paisley, you are the cake. I’m here for you. I’m here for your hard times, and I’m here for you as you grow as person. Hopefully, I will have time to review it. I was about to forget, but I really wanted this in audiobook form, but I haven’t found it.

First Lines:

Who knew writing a story could feel this good? Like releasing a caged exotic bird, and watching it fly to freedom. All these words, inside me for days and months and years, and now here they are, on paper and tucked in my backpack.

Nobody of importance will read them, but that was never the point.

Their release was the point.

The snipping of their hold on me. Goodbye, good riddance.

Hoisting my backpack higher, I tug down the hem of my jean shorts from where they’ve ridden up my legs and bounce up the steps to the English building. I’m not an English major, but this creative writing class is making me wonder if that’s where I’m headed.

A week on an island sounds like the stuff of beach dreams, but for Paisley Royce, it’s a nightmare. Her little sister is marrying her ex-college sweetheart, and Paisley is serving as maid of honor. To add insult to injury, nobody will let Paisley forget she’s single.

Bachelorette weekend changes everything when she runs into her old college frenemy, Klein Madigan.

Klein is still intelligent and funny, and somehow time has only made him more attractive.

Paisley is Klein’s ‘one that got away’, not that he’d ever admit it to her. A colossal misstep (and one terrible kiss) in college sealed their fate.

Or so they thought.

Klein’s an aspiring author allergic to social media. Paisley owns a digital marketing agency.

A brilliant plan is hatched: A trip across the country for a week of faking out her family in exchange for her firm marketing his work.

One hastily scrawled and signed contract on a bar napkin later, Paisley and Klein embark on a journey of tension, only one bed, and fake dating shenanigans.

Paisley’s goal is to survive the week.

Klein’s plan is to enjoy the sun, sand, and wedding cake.

But then there’s a scorching kiss to make up for that bad one in college.

And another kiss in a lighthouse during a thunderstorm. A gentle palm on Paisley’s lower back, and a reassuring hand squeeze under the table.

Everyone is convinced Klein and Paisley are the real deal, but as the week wears on, they begin to wonder if the only people they’re kidding are themselves.
