First Lines Fridays #4

Am I the only one who thinks I logged books in Goodreads, and it looks like I haven’t? Anyway, I’m doing First Lines Fridays since I don’t have a link to share. First Lines Friday is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page.
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first.
  • Finally… reveal the book!

Note: The original host blog does not appear to be active any longer — but if anyone knows of a new host, please share the information!

First Lines:

 There was pain.

And then, there wasn’t.

It’s the contrast between the two I notice first—that stark shift from the moment when every bone, every muscle ached from the cancer my body was struggling to escape… to the exact instant when the pain was lifted from me and I was consumed by a comforting light I see even now, with my eyes still shut.

Its glow warms my fur and fills me up inside with an understanding—a knowledge—where once there had been a void, sparking my mind to life in ways I could never have dreamed.

Goodreads Blurb:

What if your last dog has the power to choose your next dog?

Join Ranger, a determined beagle who goes from laboratory animal… to rescue dog… to stray… and finally to beloved companion of Nick, a soldier who is learning to heal, to trust, and to love right along with his four-legged friend.

And when Ranger is forced to leave Nick’s world, this vigilant dog discovers that his job has just begun.

With wit, wisdom, and the unflinching honesty, Ranger’s heart-wrenching tale of resilience reminds readers that all barriers can be transcended by love.

I love this book, 5 stars

Alex
