Love Always, Kate by D. Nichole King

The book Gods and my laptop aren’t happy with me. I just got a few more books on Kindle, but most are short, so that I can get through them pretty fast. I was pretty upset that I didn’t manage to write a review, but I was physically and mentally wiped out. I will admit I’m not a great reviewer, but I tend to pick out books by indie authors who aren’t very well known.

The one for today has been on my Kindle for nearly a decade since I got it in 2017. In Love Always, Kate by D. Nichole King, we meet Kate, a teen who, at a young age, was diagnosed with leukaemia. After she’s been cancer-free for a few years, new tests show that she has it again. Before I continue, I need to make you aware that the author writes in detail about the treatment’s side effects, and if, like me, you have had a loved one going through it, it can hit close to home.

On her first treatment day, she meets a cute boy she has never seen before. Damian only has his father left after a car accident took away the rest of his family. Sadly, he uses alcohol as a coping tool. So, as a punishment, his dad forces him to volunteer at the hospital. I forgot to tell you that Damian’s father is Kate’s doctor.

I hate how the nurses reacted when they found out she has feelings for him. It brought some of my own hospital trauma out. I know why people rated it highly back then: it was the time The Fault in Our Stars came out, and the plot is pretty similar. I gave it three stars since, although realistic, the ending felt rushed.
