A Guide To Books Written In Verse

I feel that novels are written in verse get overlooked or simply seen as just poetry. The first book I read; in this format, it was Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds. A book about gangs and loss from a different kind of view. “in sixty potent seconds—the time it takes a kid to decide whether or not he’s going to murder the guy who killed his brother.”

Then in 2018 like a lot of other readers, I read The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo which talks about this girl named Xiomara Batista life, how religion can become toxic and her passion for writing poetry. A book that has something special is Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson, an autobiography in verse on life and what was like to grow up as an African American in the 1960s and 1970s. One book that really hit home was Reaching for Sun by Tracie Vaughn Zimmer. In this novel, we meet Jose who has cerebral palsy as do I so; I can tell you that this author hit the nail on its head with the way, she dealt with topics on disability, to the point that I wrote a poem on it which you can find here.

Then a few months ago; I was in a reading slump (yes, even people like me who read a lot get them); therefore, I needed something into the rhyme of reading. So, I googled books that are written in verse, and a whole Goodreads list popped up that I’m leaving here, just in case you guys want to check it out. If you guys like this post, I will do a part two.

Books I mentioned in this post:

Long Way Down by Jason Reynolds

The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo

Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson

Reaching for Sun by Tracie Vaughn Zimmer

  1. Interesting! The first (and really only) book I’ve read in verse was Not Hungry by Kate Karyus Quinn, and I did like it but the poetry style really through me off! I really should try to read more books like this!
