December 28: Best Books I Read In 2021
Saying that this post will be a task is an understatement. Like I said yesterday, I have 24 five stars on my list this year, so bringing that to 10 will be a task.

Novels like This Is My America by Kim Johnson and The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas will always have a place in my heart because even if I’m white and never fully understand the pain people cause people due to the skin, we are born in. I know what it is like to feel like you don’t belong.

I grouped these four novels together for a reason, and that reason is that in every character, I see pieces of me.

The Death of Vivek Oji by Akwaeke Emezi is closer to my heart than I’m comfortable with, to the point that I still can’t fully express my feelings about it.

I see stonewall as one of the many events that allow me to live my life as myself today.

Call Me Athena: Girl from Detroit by Colby Cedar Smith is one powerful lesson in feminism.

The story and the photography of Penguin Bloom: The Odd Little Bird Who Saved a Family by Cameron Bloom is too stunning not to make it on my top ten list.

Land of the Cranes by Aida Salazar is as heart-breaking if not more as Living Undocumented, the documentary on Netflix.
I don’t know how I managed to wrap up to just ten, but I’m glad I did!

I love Akwaeke Emezi! But have not got around to their Vivek Oji yet, and they have a new one out next year! I am falling behind!
I hope you had a great Christmas and this is my look back at the best and most fun books I have read in 2021.

Finding a piece of yourself in a book is a powerful feeling, especially when it is unexpected!

Awww, okay, I don’t usually read about birds but in honor of a talking starling memoir landing in the #2 spot on my list, I have got to check lil’ Penguin Bloom out.
