Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by thatartsyreadergirl with a new topic every week.

October 26: Halloween Freebie.

I guess today I’m choosing an easy way by picking so of the spookiest covers or plots I have read and adding Goodreads blurbs just in case you are interested in reading them.

The Kite Runner

Goodreads Blurb:

The unforgettable, heartbreaking story of the unlikely friendship between a wealthy boy and the son of his father’s servant, The Kite Runner is a beautifully crafted novel set in a country that is in the process of being destroyed. It is about the power of reading, the price of betrayal, and the possibility of redemption; and an exploration of the power of fathers over sons—their love, their sacrifices, their lies.

Afterwards

Goodreads Blurb:

There is a fire and they are in there. They are in there…

Black smoke stains a summer blue sky. A school is on fire. And one mother, Grace, sees the smoke and rush. She knows her teenage daughter Jenny is inside. She runs into the burning building to rescue her.

Afterwards Grace must find the identity of the arsonist and protect her children from the person who’s still intent on destroying them. Afterwards, she must fight the limits of her physical strength and discover the limitlessness of love.

Burning

Goodreads Blurb:

After three years in juvie, Angela Davis is now months away from release. She’ll finally get the hell out of Brunesfield Correctional Facility.

And then Jessica arrives… she’s young – only ten years old – so why did she arrive in shackles under the highest security? And why is she being kept in segregation? No one knows what she did to end up there. But there are plenty of rumours.

Pretty soon strange things start happening to Angela and her friends. Could they be down to Jessica?

This little girl might just be more dangerous than anyone expected.

Death Can Wait

Goodreads Blurb:

A vacation to Brazil is everything Renee Walker thought it would be. Her and her husband, Luke, have an amazing time. Things get better when their friends invite them on their yacht for the return trip to the states. Luke and Renee relax as they make the slow, but wonderful journey home.

They are all unprepared when a storm rips apart the yacht. During the mayhem, Luke and Renee are thrust overboard. Miraculously unharmed, they wash up on a deserted island. They work together to survive, scavenging for food and building shelter. Before too long, they realize the island is far from deserted. The inhabitants are blood thirsty men who will stop at nothing to protect their island and take a particular interest in Renee. For the first time in their lives, Luke and Renee are forced to survive.

The Zodiac Killer (Zodiac Killers #1)

Goodreads Blurb:

Detective Darek Blake thought the secrets of his past were long buried, but when a young girl is murdered in a familiar way, finding the killer will not only bring back memories he’s repressed, but give him a golden opportunity to impress the FBI.

So, when his partner, Special Agent Lizzy McNamara digs up evidence that’s a little too close to home, he’s shaken to the core. The worst sin he’s ever committed bubbles up, threatening to destroy his future.

Are the Zodiac killings a coincidence or is someone toying with him, and if so… who?

Rattle (The Bone Collector, #1)

Goodreads Blurb:

A serial killer to chill your bones

A psychopath more frightening than Hannibal Lecter.

He has planned well. He leads two lives. In one he’s just like anyone else. But in the other he is the caretaker of his family’s macabre museum.

Now the time has come to add to his collection. He is ready to feed his obsession, and he is on the hunt.

Jakey Frith and Clara Foyle have something in common. They have what he needs.

What begins is a terrifying cat-and-mouse game between the sinister collector, Jakey’s father and Etta Fitzroy, a troubled detective investigating a spate of abductions.

Set in London’s Blackheath, Rattle by Fiona Cummins explores the seam of darkness that runs through us all; the struggle between light and shadow, redemption and revenge.

It is a glimpse into the mind of a sinister psychopath. And it’s also a story about not giving up hope when it seems that all hope is already lost.

The Puppet Show (Washington Poe, #1)

Goodreads Blurb:

A serial killer is burning people alive in the Lake District’s prehistoric stone circles. He leaves no clues and the police are helpless.

When his name is found carved into the charred remains of the third victim, disgraced detective Washington Poe is brought back from suspension and into an investigation he wants no part of.

Reluctantly partnered with the brilliant but socially awkward civilian analyst, Tilly Bradshaw, the mismatched pair uncover a trail that only he is meant to see. The elusive killer has a plan and for some reason Poe is part of it.

As the body count rises, Poe discovers he has far more invested in the case than he could have possibly imagined. And in a shocking finale that will shatter everything he’s ever believed about himself, Poe will learn that there are things far worse than being burned alive.

Cold Justice (DC Ebony Willis, #4)

Goodreads Blurb:

A killer seeking revenge. A community protecting its own. The most explosive case yet for DC Willis and DI Carter.

Cornwall, 2000. Jenna wakes up after a drug-laced party to the realization that she has been raped. And it looks like it involved her new boyfriend, who has come down from London for the summer. But the case is assigned to a corrupt local police sergeant, who knows he can extort money from the boy’s father, prominent London MP Jeremy Forbes-Wright, in return for his silence.

Fifteen years later and Jeremy Forbes-Wright is found dead under highly suspicious circumstances. On the same day, his two-year-old grandson Samuel is kidnapped on a London street and DC Ebony Willis and DI Dan Carter are called in to find the missing boy. They soon realize all roads lead to Cornwall and to find the little boy they must finally get justice for Jenna. But someone is murdering the people they need to speak to and time is running out.

The Last Journalist (Alex Vane # 5)

Goodreads Blurb:

On a cold, rainy night in Seattle, a legendary journalist is found face down in the street below a posh high-rise. Local police are calling it a suicide, but Alex Vane sees signs of murder.
With help from a brash young journalist, Alex pieces together clues from the dead man’s extraordinary career. But an unexpected discovery leads him to believe that all those legendary scoops may have been built on a lie so great it led to his murder. If what he’s discovered is true, it’s proof of a conspiracy that could upend everything Alex believes in and rewrite American history. Just when he thinks he’s cracked the case, another prominent investigative journalist turns up dead.
Is someone systematically killing reporters.

Tuesday's Child

Goodreads Blurb:

My daughter is dead.
My husband and I cling to what’s left of our family, desperate to make sense of the tragedy.
But when the sheriff knocks, he delivers news no mother should ever have to hear.
Our daughter was murdered.
And my son is the prime suspect.

When we adopted eleven-year-old Holden, we weren’t wearing rose-colored glasses.
But we never could have imagined this.

They say you can’t pick your family.
But I picked mine.
Did I choose my daughter’s murderer?

Alex
